Pick a stance on Immigration
Written by Michael Vass
Immigration. It’s a powerful word and it is one of the key issues of the Presidential election of 2008. There is no good answer to what to do, or at least none has been offered to date.
There are those that want to lift all restrictions and accept all illegal immigrants (or undocumented workers if you must say that) in the nation now as citizens. Some want a path that may or may not include fees and travel back to their home nations that can lead to eventual citizenship. Yet others want to have every illegal alien deported no matter what the circumstances.
In each case there are arguments for and against. Each side has some point that is as valid as the other, often the equal of the detracting side. What is a person to do? How will this affect your vote?
Well perhaps this will help. The New York Times has organized a short summary of the general positions of virtually all the Presidential candidates. There is a notable exception in that Mr. Fred Thompson is missing from the Republican candidates. Other than that, the leading candidates of both parties are included.
This may not decide who you would want to pick, nor who will run, but it may give you added insight into what you can expect from the various candidates as President. I think that the more informed you are the better the nation is. This, like several other issues facing the nation today, has ramifications that reach further down the road than merely a single Presidential term.
So check out the positions, and let me know what you think. Perhaps you can sway others to your same thought, maybe not. But a good debate of the issues helps to make sure only the best candidate for the nation gets elected.
